Warhammer 40,000: Tacticus wants to bring the tabletop experience to your smartphone, and you can find out if the developers, Snowstorm Studios, succeeded with that aim as the game was released today (August 15) on Android and iOS devices.

An official licensed Warhammer product, the game features a familiar cast of factions and races and a - true to the tabletop - hex terrain style map for players to do battle on; there is plenty to do at launch with both PvE and PvP game modes, as well as a deep Guild vs. Guild system.

The story is penned by famed Warhammer writer Matt Forbeck and plans are in place for more factions to be added in time.

The game currently boasts eight factions: Necrons, Adepta Sororitas, Black Legion, Astra Militarum, Black Legion, Death Guard, Orks, Black Templars, and Ultramarines, with each offering up unique units and upgrade paths.

Upgrades work similarly to titles in the Supercell family, with XP gained after each battle, and further customization is offered to players using upgrade slots.

The game is free-to-play with the usual mix of premium in-game currencies. Time will tell if the Stockholm-based studio has found the line between reasonable grinding and paying out to quicken up the process.

Extra points have to be given to the developers for actively looking to bring the traditional Warhammer community into the fold with care taken with the game's mechanics, factions, and artwork—and so far, they appear on board.

That community is now spoilt for choice when it comes to virtual recreations of their beloved tabletop. Later this year, first-person shooter Warhammer 40,000: Darktide is due out, as is the 2D action game Warhammer 40,000: Shootas, Blood, & Teef, adding to a huge catalog of games that go back thirty years.

How To Download Warhammer 40,000: Tacticus

After a beta period, Warhammer 40,000: Tacticus is now available on Android and iOS devices.

For Android gamers, Warhammer 40,000: Tacticus will be available from the Google Play Store or Galaxy Store, while for iOS devices, it will be available on the Apple App Store.

While the game is nice to look at, it isn't that graphically intensive, and while the developers haven't released recommended specifications, most mobile gamers should find that their devices can keep up.
