Where To Start With Final Fantasy

This is technically a trick question because the true answer is that you can pick any game in the series and make it your first Final Fantasy.

But it's also not that simple because other Final Fantasy games aren't mainline entries in the series and can either be sequels to a mainline entry or something that isn't anything like Final Fantasy!

The mainline entries in the Final Fantasy series are Final Fantasy 1 through 16. These games are considered the main meat and potatoes of the series, and you can pick any of these and start your journey there quickly.

Final Fantasy Online Games

Final Fantasy 11 and Final Fantasy 14 are online role-playing games with single-player stories and online elements, with the latter being one of the top MMOs.

You could start here if you're a fan of World of Warcraft, Guild Wars, RuneScape, or any other online RPG.

Final Fantasy Old School Era

The old-school era is what we are referring to as the pixel art entries in the series. Final Fantasy 1 through 6 all have pixel art and are considered amazing games.

Final Fantasy 1 and 2 are bare-bones compared to the other games in this era.

Final Fantasy 3 through 6 are all very story-heavy entries in the series, but they also start introducing some interesting gameplay mechanics.

As it stands, every game in this series has its interesting mechanic, and rarely is it carried over to the next title.

There's been a recent Final Fantasy 1 - 6 Pixel Remaster released on all modern gaming platforms, and if you are a gamer who doesn't necessarily dislike pixel art graphics, you should start here!

Final Fantasy Classics Era

The classic era for Final Fantasy contains four entries in the Final Fantasy series. Each one is very different, but these games are the ones that Final Fantasy fans will almost always recommend to you.

Final Fantasy 7, Final Fantasy 8, Final Fantasy 9, and Final Fantasy Tactics are considered by many to be the best games in the series.

These are all classic turn-based titles that have some interesting gameplay twists.

All of these games are easily accessible through modern HD ports to most modern consoles, minus Final Fantasy Tactics.

Final Fantasy Modern Era

The contemporary era here contains six games. The opinions you'll hear from fans about games in this era will vastly differ.

The games in this era are more modern and aren't turn-based like the older games in the series.

Final Fantasy 10, Final Fantasy 12, Final Fantasy 13, Final Fantasy 15, Final Fantasy 16 and Final Fantasy 7 Remake.

Final Fantasy 10, 12, and 13 are interesting games that focus hard on the RPG mechanics of the series while being more modern.

Final Fantasy 15, 16, and 7 Remake focuses on action and beautiful graphics.

Any of the games we directly mentioned in this article will be the best for you to try if you want to dip your toes into the amazing series known as Final Fantasy.
