A job listing suggests that Sony will be making a massive step forward in the mobile gaming scene with the development of a PlayStation mobile games store.
Just weeks after Microsoft formally announced its ambitious project of launching an Xbox mobile game store in July, Sony is taking steps in a similar direction with PlayStation.
A recent job posting for a 'Mobile Platform Architect' has caused quite a stir as it appears that Sony is on the hunt for a team to develop a PlayStation mobile games store.
PlayStation Enters The Mobile Gaming Scene With A Dedicated Mobile Store
The job listing in question states that 'PlayStation Studios Mobile is seeking an experienced software engineer to design PlayStation’s platform for developing, publishing, and operating free-to-play mobile games.' It's a bold step, to say the least, but a noble one all the same as the field has proven to be extremely competitive.
Overall, the responsibilities listed are quite extensive, with tasks including designing the system's architecture and integrating the platform with internal services most likely including PSN accounts.
But the main eye-catching detail is that Sony will be providing players with 'free-to-play mobile games.' The only issue with that, as pointed out by TweakTown, is that Sony has a limited catalog of mobile games besides the 2015 release 'Fate/Grand Order.'
Sony Will Need To Beef Up Their Mobile Game Inventory To Make Their Store A Success
Sony will need to invest more than just money and manpower into developing a mobile game store to build a vibrant mobile game ecosystem, they will need to develop games to fill up the store's shelves.
As a PlayStation mobile store has yet to be officially announced, it's unclear what Sony has planned for the future or what games they intend to create. What we do know is that their plan was set in motion years ago.
In 2022, Sony acquired developers Neon Koi (then known as Savage Game Studios) and added them to PlayStation Studios' Mobile Division. Since then, it's been rather quiet on the activities of this division.
I'm thrilled to welcome Savage Game Studios. They join a new independent PlayStation Studios Mobile Division whose mission is to reach even more new players around the world. Michail and his team are already working on something great; I can't wait until they can show you. https://t.co/61HpPOmFvs

At the time, the aim was to 'focus on innovative, on-the-go experiences based on new and existing PlayStation IP.' This gives a small glimpse into Sony's potential ambitions and how they could be targeting a triple-A gaming experience on mobile.
Sony joins Xbox as the latest batch of major gaming companies to enter the booming mobile gaming scene. In a new report, experts predict the mobile games sector to generate $195 billion by 2030.
