CD Projekt Red has recently hinted at a potential move to bring some of their most popular IPs to the world of mobile games.
In a surprising turn of events – but not so for some of you mobile gaming enthusiasts who've been hoping for this for a while – CD Projekt Red, has confirmed that they are looking into the possibility of licensing out their IP for mobile games.
CD Projekt Red recently hosted its annual FY 2023 earnings conference to offer the public the company's latest earnings report. While the company's 39% increase in full-year profits for 2023 was one to be astonished by, it was of course the news of potential mobile games based on the company's popular IP that caught the attention of watchers.
CD Projekt Is Considering Licensing Out Their "Big IPs" To Mobile Developers
This piece of news was revealed during the Q&A session of the conference where a caller asked the Polish developers if they considered licensing out their big IPs to third parties to make mobile game spin-offs.
In response, CD Projekt Red CEO Michael Nowakowski stated:
The answer is pretty simple here. The answer is yes, we are considering such a move.In fact, we were pursuing, through conversations, opportunities like that. We have nothing to announce just yet, but when the time comes, we would. As for a one-off or other business model related to any such potential partnership, we would not comment on the specifics here, to be honest, plus there is nothing in place that we’re talking about.
This may be a moment worth celebrating because this finally puts the action in place over theoretical plans CD Projekt previously announced in 2022.
Back then, the developers described a "franchise flywheel" where their goal in the following years was toexpand the company brand through new fields and mediums such as comics, TV shows, films, partnerships, and "spin-off" mobile games.
If they do proceed with this plan, then the door will be opened for many of the company's popular IPs such as The Witcher and Cyberpunk to one day have their own mobile game.
However, some spectators have cautioned others by stating that it's too early to celebrate as these potential games will not be developed by CD Projekt Red themselves. Instead, they will be developed by a third-party developer.
CD Projekt Red has developed mobile games in the past such as The Witcher Adventure Game and Gwent: The Witcher Card Game. They officially ended support for the latter in October 2023.
